Addressing Hair Loss Due to Weight Loss

Introduction

At MD Total Wellness, we specialize in weight loss and the issues that arise because of weight loss. One common issue is hair loss. Hair loss is a common concern, affecting millions, and rapid weight loss can exacerbate it.

Addressing Hair Loss Due to Weight Loss

With the surge in popularity of GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), reports of hair thinning have increased. The stress of caloric restriction, nutrient deficiencies (e.g., protein, iron, zinc), and hormonal shifts from quick weight loss disrupt the hair growth cycle, pushing follicles from the active anagen phase to telogen.

Clinical trials indicate hair loss in about 4-5% of tirzepatide users1 and 3% of semaglutide users in weight loss studies2, with real-world data suggesting a much higher risk, particularly in women.3 Fortunately, this can often be successfully addressed, especially when treated early. Early signs include increased shedding (over 100 hairs daily) or visible scalp, emphasizing the need for prompt action to preserve follicles and optimize outcomes.

Our goal is to educate you about effective options for hair restoration and about the services MD Total Wellness offers.

Introducing Alma TED®: A Breakthrough for Weight Loss-Related Hair Loss

Alma TED® (TransEpidermal Delivery) is emerging as an excellent non-invasive treatment for hair loss associated with weight loss and GLP-1 therapies. It uses ultrasound and sound waves to deliver nutrients and growth factors directly to hair follicles, stimulating regrowth without needles or pain.4 Clinical studies demonstrate an average 23% increase in hair density at one month and 31% at six months after three treatments.4 Compared to PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), Alma TED is more reliable, efficacious, painless, and noninvasive, with no downtime.5,6 It’s increasingly favored over PRP for these reasons and is particularly effective for acute hair loss, making it ideal for weight loss-related thinning.

Combination Treatments for Optimal Results

To enhance outcomes, Alma TED® can be combined with other therapies. Hair supplements are important (e.g. Nutraphol, Wellbel, etc.), especially during calorie restriction from weight loss or GLP-1 use, to address potential nutrient deficiencies like iron, zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins.7,8 Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) devices, such as the medical-grade, dual-wavelength Alma LMNT® (available from our office), stimulate follicles and improve density.9,10 Medications like topical minoxidil promote regrowth, while oral spironolactone reduces androgen effects in women, often used together for better efficacy.11,12

What to Expect from Alma TED® Treatment

Alma TED® sessions are quick and comfortable, lasting 20-30 minutes. The process involves cleansing the scalp, applying a proprietary growth factor and nutrient dense serum, and using ultrasound to drive it into follicles—no injections or anesthesia needed.13,14 Patients often describe a mild warming or tingling sensation. There’s no recovery time; daily activities can be resumed immediately.13,14 Typically, at least three monthly treatments are recommended for optimal results, with maintenance every 6-12 months as needed.4
